‘Dear John’ knocks ‘Avatar’ from box office top spot
LOS ANGELES — A sci-fi love story has given way to an earthbound romance at the box office, livening up typically slow times at theaters over Super Bowl weekend.
Released by Sony’s Screen Gems banner, “Dear John” debuted as the No. 1 movie with $32.4 million, knocking off “Avatar” after seven weekends in first place, according to studio estimates Sunday.
“Avatar” slipped to No. 2 with $23.6 million, raising its domestic total to $630.1 million. Directed by James Cameron, 20th Century Fox’s “Avatar” surpassed his own “Titanic,” which had held the domestic revenue record at $600.8 million.

San Diego military jet crash follow-up

I know I will never forget how I felt watching Dong Yun Yoon talking to the media the next day. It had only been hours since learning that he’d lost his wife, daughters and mother-in-law to the crash. With emotions still so raw, he came out and eulogized his wife and daughters… and then, he asked us to pray for the pilot as well. His press conference was one of the most touching and “real” things I have ever seen on TV.
“Horrible thing to happen” watch »
The Marines have been investigating what went wrong that day… and have determined a number of things, including deferred maintenance and faulty decisions by the pilot, contributed to the accident. Four people have been fired… and nine others have been relieved of duty.
Oscar shows its dark side
For your consideration: A pedophile serial killer with a creepy dollhouse hobby, a murderous Nazi who delights in tormenting Jews, and a hateful mother who abuses her daughter and granddaughter.
Hollywood loves a bad boy and so does Oscar, with academy voters nominating several roles this year that are less than cordial, if not downright crazy.
There’s Christoph Waltz for his chilling performance as smooth-talking, Jew-hunting Nazi Col. Hans Landa in “Inglourious Basterds”; Stanley Tucci for his scary, blue-eyed turn as pedophile George Harvey in “The Lovely Bones”; and Mo’Nique for her role as Mary Jones, the abusive mother in “Precious.”

Thriller ‘From Paris’ stumbles over laughable casting
In the space of just a few weeks, we have movies starring Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson and John Travolta. It’s like the early ’90s all over again.
Nostalgia is on Travolta’s mind, too. In “From Paris With Love,” he plays a violent but chatty CIA agent who, while bullets fly, likes to engage in dialogue that recalls “Pulp Fiction” as if written by action film hacks.
The film is directed by Pierre Morel, who helmed another spy thriller, the surprising 2008 hit “Taken.” Both were written (this one by Robert Mark Kamen) from a story idea by the French action filmmaker Luc Besson.

‘Avatar’ closes in on 1997 ‘Titanic’ box office record
LOS ANGELES — James Cameron’s “Avatar” is on a course to sink “Titanic” at the box office.
No. 1 for the sixth-straight weekend with $36 million, the 20th Century Fox sci-fi spectacle lifted its domestic total to $552.8 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. “Avatar” raised its worldwide total to $1.841 billion. That’s $2 million shy of first place behind Cameron’s last movie, the 1997 shipwreck epic “Titanic,” at $1.843 billion.
The studio said “Avatar” has hit $1.29 billion in international ticket sales, passing the $1.24 billion mark set by “Titanic.” The saga set on the alien world of Pandora is also en route to overtake “Titanic” in domestic sales. After 37 days in theaters, “Avatar” passed “The Dark Knight” on Saturday to become the second-highest grossing film.
